Observe over time.

Sort and group things.

Use simple measurements and data to make comparisons.

A Year 2 scientist begins to explain their ideas using scientific language and learns how to record what they find in different ways.

What does a Winnall Scientist look like by the end of Year 4?

Plan and carry out a fair test.

Use appropriate tools and measurements.

Record data in tables and graphs and begin to spot patterns in results.

A Year 4 scientist asks thoughtful questions, makes predictions, and uses their knowledge of scientific concepts to explain what they find out.

What does a Winnall Scientist look like by the end of Year 5?

Carry out more complex investigations.

Control variables.

Take repeated measurements.

Analyse data and draw more accurate conclusions.

A Year 5 scientist understands how scientific ideas have developed over time and begin to consider how science impacts the wider world.

What does a Winnall Scientist look like by the end of Year 6?

Plan and carry out investigations with increasing independence.

Evaluate their methods.

Explain conclusions clearly using scientific evidence and reflect critically on their results.

A Year 6 scientist thinks like a real scientist- they ask big questions, think logically, and can communicate their findings confidently.
